Cornelis (Corny) Norel, (born 19/6/1949)

Employment history


-       Started out as a technical sales engineer at Stewarts and Lloyds during the period from 1973 to 1978, with exposure to various products including pumps, valves, diesel engines and irrigation equipment.

-       Joined Salweir in 1978 as assistant Design engineer. This commenced with a 4 month training period at the Weir (Harland) factory in Alloa, Scotland.

-       Thereafter the period from 1988 till 2007 was spent with involvement in various aspects of  Sales and Projects, initially within Salweir, and later within Weir Envirotech / Weir Minerals.



Career Milestones


-       Involvement in supply and commissioning of 3MW horizontal split case pumps at the Driel Barrage in the Drakensberg.

-       Responsibility for the operation of the Salweir Test bed.

-       Involvement in the development of various multi stage pumps for the mining sector.

-       Project management of a number of small to medium projects involving supply and delivery and installation of pumps for various mines and water authorities.

-       The Salweir / Envirotech merger in 1996, provided a challenging opportunity to become involved in various aspects of slurry pump applications.

-       Involvement with SAPMA training since the early 1980’s.



2007 till present


After taking early retirement during 2007, Norel was re-employed by Weir Minerals Africa as a Technical Consultant. In this position a valuable role is filled in acting as a liaison between the Engineering and Sales arms of the business. Furthermore Norel has been actively involved in the training aspects over SAPMA, both in preparation of lecture material and lecturing on a regular basis.
